Hi, I am not an Australian resident or citizen. I have been contracted to provide some services to an Australian Company from India. I am not employed but will fit under the criteria ‘contractor’. I will get paid based on hours I work and the invoice I will raise. The company advised they can pay in an Australian Bank Account and I can withdraw it into my local bank account in India. I know there is a Tax agreement between India and Australia.

What are my tax implications?

Thank you.

Hi @Numbersgal_13,

If you're a non-resident contractor providing services from India to an Australian company, and you’re not physically present in Australia, then you usually won’t pay Australian income tax,

Your income isn’t considered to have an Australian source unless you have a permanent establishment here (like an office or fixed base), or you’re physically in Australia for more than 183 days.

You don’t need to register for an ABN unless you’re carrying on an enterprise in Australia.

The India–Australia tax treaty helps make sure you’re not taxed twice. You’ll usually pay tax in India on that income, and the treaty helps avoid double taxation.

Check out our Providing services in Australia page – it’ll go through this info in more detail and explain things a bit further.
