After submitting my 2024-25 tax return, I've realised that a deduction for work-related expense should have been included in the 2023-2024 as cost was incurred in June 2024. I've submitted amendments for 2024 and 2025 transferring the deduction to the previous year. ATO has appropriately increased my tax owing for 2025 but has made a nil change statement for 2024. Why would that be when it is the same deduction at the same item on the tax returns?

Hi @thikasbrik,
If we’ve made a nil change to your 2023–24 return (even though you added a deduction), it could be because the deduction didn’t change your tax outcome.
We use tax calculators to work out your tax based on your full return, and each year can have slightly different tax rules. So even if you add a deduction, it might not affect the final result. We have income tax calculators for the 2015–16 to 2024–25 income years if you’d like to estimate tax refund or debt for each year.
If the amendment hasn’t fully processed yet, the system sometimes shows a nil change while it’s still reviewing the details. You’ll usually get a final notice once it’s done.
