I am a co-director/owner of a foreign company currently going through a MLI determination in UK, as I would like to pay tax in this country. After more attempts than I want to count to get through to ATO business support, to register for withholding tax/ABN, I have now multiple times been given reference numbers and not been called back. Currently have one reference for PAYGW that was promised two weeks ago I would be called back for. No call as yet.

My question is how as a business am I meant to report or pay tax, if no one at the ATO will return referenced calls, answer the phone, provide no email correspondence, and needs to pass you on to specialist teams who never call back.

Hi @PA1974,

If you’ve already called and been given reference numbers, you can quote those when you call again to follow up. If you’re not getting a response, you can also lodge a complaint and we’ll follow up for you.

Until your registrations are sorted, you won’t be able to report or pay tax correctly. If you’re trying to meet your obligations but can’t due to delays on our end, it’s important to document your attempts (e.g. reference numbers, dates of calls), in case you need to explain later why there was a delay in getting your registrations finalised.
