A lot of our clients are in industries that do not use online services (SMSF client over age 80).

They all try numerous times to contact the ATO via the phone to link an agent. And regularly get message they are too busy to take the call. So it takes up to weeks and cause a lot of stress to our clients to be able to get through to the ATO to complete this process. Is there an alternative process i.e. can they write a letter to the ATO and if so what details or information does this require to work. This process of nominee an agent for those that don't have online services is really not working!

Hi @Bells,

Your clients can choose to write to us. They should include:

  • full legal name of the trustee
  • date of birth
  • residential address
  • TFN (Tax File Number)
  • ABN of the SMSF
  • name and registration number of the tax agent
  • a clear statement authorising us to link the SMSF to the specified tax agent
  • signature of the trustee.

It’s worth encouraging your clients to phone our business line again before opting to write to us, as written requests can take longer to process.

If your clients are individuals, they can give permission through their myGov account linked to the ATO.

We also have guides to help your clients set up Online Services for Business.
