Hi,

I changed my workplace in Nov 24. I had novated lease before Nov and using my own vehicle for work after changing to new job.

I am planning to use cents per km method for Dec-June period. Wondering if I can still claim upto 5000km or need to prorate it for the months i have worked on the new job.

Thanks for reply.

You don't prorate. See the method below

Expenses for a car you own or lease | Australian Taxation Office

"To calculate your deduction using this method, multiply the number of work-related kilometres you travel in the car by the rate per kilometre for that income year."

Hi Taxduck,

Thank you for the reply.

I did read ATO website and it is not very clear on what I should do in my case.

However It does say 5000km per car. So perhaps i will not prorate.

Thanks again.

Hi @husnat,

You can claim the full 5,000 km limit under the cents per kilometre method for the 2024-25 financial year, regardless of when you started using your car for work-related purposes.

The 5,000 km limit applies per car per income year, not prorated based on how many months you've worked in a particular job.

Just remember to keep records showing how you calculated your work-related kilometres for the December to June period. This could include a diary of work trips or similar documentation to support your claim.
