We are currently relief teachers who have been approached by a number of schools regarding our interest in being available for relief teaching work in rural and remote areas. This will involve extensive travel to move between various schools. We would be leaving our home base empty/vacant and supplying our own accomodation via a caravan. We would receive no allowances from the Department / employer for travel expenses. Could we consider a claim as itinerant workers as we will be establishing a network of schools both private, Catholic and Public. We would have a degree of uncertainty re location of employment, have no fixed place or places at which we would carry out duties / profession and would be moving from one area to another.

Doesn't come under the meaning of itinerant work.
The travel you are doing is to obtain work, not as part of your work duties.
Trips you can and can't claim |
See the tax ruling for deductibility of transport expenses
