Hi @JoshyD,

Generally, you don't need to notify the ATO when leaving Australia permanently unless you have a study or training loan.

If you do have a study loan, you'll need to complete an overseas travel notification within 7 days of leaving Australia. You can do this through ATO online services via myGov or through an Australian registered tax agent.

Before you leave, it's worth setting up myGov access for overseas so you can still manage your tax affairs from New Zealand. You might also be able to lodge an early tax return if you're leaving permanently.

Hi,

I wanted to ask the same question and found this information from the link below.

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/coming-to-australia-or-going-overseas/living-overseas-and-remaining-an-australian-tax-resident

"Before leaving Australia or within 7 days of leaving, you'll need to update your contact details using our online services through myGov.

You'll also have to submit an overseas travel notification. The time period for submitting your overseas travel notification is either 7 days after:

  • the day you leave Australia, if your intention at the time you leave is to remain outside Australia for at least 183 days
  • the end of 183 days, if you didn't intend to remain outside Australia for at least 183 days but have been outside Australia for at least that period in any 12 month period."

So would I need to submit overseas travel notification on MyGov within 7 days of departure since I am leaving Australia permanently and cease to be an Australian tax resident from date of departure?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi @Timmy_E,

The link you provided is when someone is moving overseas and remaining an Australian tax resident. If you're permanently leaving and not remaining an Australian tax resident, then the info you linked likely wouldn't apply to you.

I'd also say best to read what @RachelATO said on 18 November 2025, as it may relate to your situation.

If you any income to report for the current financial year, you may be able to lodge a tax return before leaving Australia.
