Above is not a statement. Can I claim carpet removal as an immediate tax deduction of my tenant wants it removed because they have allergies?
You will have to explain how this is an expense. Are you doing this yourself? Are you paying someone to do it? Are you replacing the carpets with other floor coverings? Were you claiming decline in value (depreciation) on these carpets? Are you selling the old carpets?
Hi @kimlau1,
You generally can't claim carpet removal as an immediate tax deduction. The cost of removing carpet is generally considered a capital expense rather than a repairs and maintenance expense that can be claimed immediately.
If you're removing the carpet as part of replacing it with new flooring, this would typically be treated as a capital works deduction that you claim over several years, not as an immediate deduction. However, if you're replacing a depreciating asset (like carpet) that cost $300 or less, you may be able to claim an immediate deduction for the replacement.
We have some guidance on rental expenses you can claim. It sets out which costs can be claimed immediately versus those claimed over time.
