I read this statement from an ATO expert on this forum -

"If you hold the bullion as an investment it is considered a capital asset." (italics and bolding mine)

what is the definition or defining characteristics of an 'investment' according to the ATO? I searched it up on the ATO website and couldnt find anything meaningful for me. i want to determine if the bullion i have purchased is an investment or not.

thank you.

It is an investment if you are not continually buying and selling = trading in gold.

sorry but that didnt answer my question.

i simply want to know 'what is the ato's definition or what are the key characteristics of 'investment''; irrespective of what the underlying asset might be. how is determined if something is bought or sold with 'investing' in mind?

thank you
