Hi there,

I have come back to Australia after spending my childhood abroad. I have an australian passport and a certified copy of my birth certificate, have a bank account and registered a car. I do not have a medicare card or an australian drivers licence. My attempts to apply for a TFN so far failed as I apperently do not have the right amount if identification to do so, can't get the medicare card for the same reasons. I am an Australian citizen and have been born in Melbourne. Any ideas how to go from here?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @Corinna

You'll need to apply for a TFN using the paper form since you don't have the necessary identity documents for a Strong myID. Australian citizens who can't apply online or at Australia Post can use the paper application form.

To get started, you'll need to download and complete the Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432) form. If you can't download it, you can order it online or phone 1300 720 092 (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

When you lodge your application, you must provide certified copies of three current documents that prove your identity. The documents you mentioned, your Australian passport and full birth certificate, as well as a bank statement would meet the proof of identity requirements. You don't need to send original documents as they may not be returned to you.

You should receive your TFN within 28 days from when we receive your completed application and the required documents. To prevent delays, don't lodge another application while we're processing your first one.
