According to Services Australia, adjusted taxable income may include different types of income:

  • taxable income
  • foreign income
  • tax-exempt foreign income
  • total net investment losses
  • reportable fringe benefits
  • reportable superannuation contributions
  • certain tax free pensions or benefits.

It may also include a deemed amount from account based income streams.

However, it is unclear to me how exactly my adjusted taxable income has been calculated. I have looked through my full notice of assessment and all the information in the tax return, and cannot see how the number that I see on my Centrelink Family Tax Benefit statements. There is simply no alignment. I would like to ask the ATO/ Services Australia to show me the calculation (i.e. which amounts were included), but I cannot see how to do this. How can I clarify this please?

You could try the calculator. See if that helps

Thank you, that solved it! I had searched and searched the ATO website and Centrelink website and didn't find anything that linked to or even mentioned this in relation to adjusted taxable income. Is there a way to provide feedback to the ATO to make this information more accessible and easier to find on their website? e.g. a page on adjusted taxable income and a link to how to calculate this?

Hi Kayer,

Yes, there's a way to provide feedback. There's both an online form and phone number you can call.

The feedback form is designed for comments about our products, services or how we deliver them.
