Hi,

I am an Australian resident and planning on working in the Netherlands for ~6 months. I will be doing my Australian job and being paid from Australia, however I will be residing in the Netherlands. I understand I will have to pay Australian tax, but are there any other tax implications? I saw something online which mentioned I can work in the Netherlands for a period of ~180 on this arrangement without incurring additional tax.

Hi @User119,

If you remain an Australian resident for tax purposes while working in the Netherlands for around 6 months, you’ll generally continue to be taxed in Australia on your worldwide income, including salary paid by your Australian employer.

The info you’ve seen about being able to work overseas for around 180 or 183 days isn’t a general rule that lets you work in another country tax‑free. In many cases, it comes from double tax agreements and only applies if specific conditions are met, not just the length of time you’re overseas.

We can’t confirm your residency status or whether foreign tax would apply here, as that depends on your personal situation. You can read more about how Australian tax residency is worked out, and what it means for your tax obligations in one of our articles.

Because working overseas can involve tax obligations in both countries, you may also want to speak with a tax professional who can look at your Australian and Dutch tax positions together.
