Hi,

For the last financial year I've been mostly working from home and incurring additional expenses at my parent's house. I'm the only person working at home, but my parents incur the extra costs. Are they able to make a deduction for that, as I understand that I won't be able to due to not incurring additional expenses myself?

Thanks

Hi nightmelon,

Welcome to ATO Community!

Unfortunately, your parents wouldn't be able to claim a deduction for the expenses because they don't incur the costs in earning their assessable income.

Your understanding about your own situation is also correct. Unless you spent money or contributed towards the qualifying types of expenses for working from home, you wouldn't be able to claim a deduction for the expenses.

For more information, the ATO website has useful guidance.

This is my personal view; Im an ATO employee who chooses to help out here in my own time.
