Is there a cap on how much you can donate to a DGR?
Hi @ Peggeee
There are caps on the level of donations that you can claim as deductions to political parties and independent candidates.
The most you can claim in an income year is:
- $1,500 for contributions and gifts to political parties
- $1,500 for contributions and gifts to independent candidates and members.
Outside of that you can make donations up to 100% of your gross income.
You do need to ensure that you are making a donation and not a contribution. A contribution is a payment for which you receive a material benefit, like attending a fundraising dinner.
You can still claim deductions for contributions but the rules are different.
