Managing your access to our online services doesn't have to be a headache. We've got some handy tips to help you avoid common errors and keep things running smoothly!

Why does ATO online services say my sign in doesn’t meet access requirements or that I need to increase my identity strength?

If you received this type of message when accessing ATO online services (through myGov or the ATO app) it means you’ve previously used myID to sign in and you’ve set your online access strength.

To continue accessing ATO online services you need to use your myID with the same identity strength you originally had. For example, if you used a myID with a Strong identity strength to sign in previously, you need to use your Strong myID to sign in now.

Note: Your myID identity strength is unique to each device – if you’ve switched device or set up a new myID, you may need to re-verify your ID to match the highest identity strength you’ve achieved.

What is online access strength?

Using your myID to access ATO online services (through myGov or the ATO app) will automatically set your online access strength. The identity strength of your myID becomes your online access strength in ATO online services. Once set, you’ll need to use your myID (with the same identity strength) for all future access.

The higher your myID identity strength and online access strength, the more secure your account is from fraudsters trying to access your account or impersonate you.

What if I can no longer meet my online access strength requirements?

Check whether you can increase your identity strength in your myID app. If you’ve recently set up or transferred your myID app to a new device – make sure you’ve reverified your ID. This may help you meet your online access strength requirement.

If you’re no longer able to meet your online access strength requirement or need to change it, then you’ll need to contact us on our Individuals enquiry line.

What if I deleted the myID app or got a new phone?

You can set up the myID app again. Make sure you:

  • use the same email address you originally set up with

  • set up to the same identity strength – your identity strength is unique to each device.

Find out more about setting up again. Once you’ve set up your myID app (to the same identity strength) you’ll be able to continue accessing ATO online services.

How can I check my online access strength?

You can check your online access strength under:

  • your Personal details in ATO online services (through myGov)

  • My details in the ATO app.

How can I increase my online access strength?

Your online access strength is determined by the identity strength of your myID when you access ATO online services. The highest online access strength you can set is Strong.

To set a Strong online access strength, simply:

What if I can’t achieve Strong identity strength?

While a Strong identity strength better protects your account, there are other options.

You can still use a myID with a Standard identity strength to access ATO online services (through myGov or the ATO app). Using myID is still a more secure sign in option than other methods.

The myID website has more info on identity strength and help for verifying your identity documents.

What happens if I disconnect myID from myGov?

Disconnecting your myID from myGov won't reset your online access strength for ATO online services. You’ll need to connect it again to access ATO online services.
