Hi there,

My Tax Refund was much lower than the estimate, I do have a centerlink debt so I assumed it was used to offset this.

However upon checking my centerlink account the Money owe section is still showing it is unpaid.

Would my refund show up and clear this debt straight away or does it take a few days to process?

Note-My notice of assessment doesn't show anything about centerlink or why the amount is lower

Any information is much appreciated!

Hi @Jax222,

It does sound like part of your refund was offset to your Centrelink debt. Usually there would be information on your notice of assessment under 'Additional information' - 'Other amounts payable/refundable'.

If you've received a statement of account along with or just after your notice of assessment it should show the transactions. There'll be the initial tax credit raised from your lodgement then the amount that's been offset to Centrelink as a debit (it might just say 'other government agency' or words to that affect).

From your ATO online account select Tax then Accounts then Tax accounts. Click on the hyperlink for your Income tax account (usually Income tax 551). From there you should be able to see the transactions.

I'd say Centrelink do take some time to balance your account when they've notified us to offset an amount from your refund. I'm unsure of what their processing timeframes are unfortunately. See how you go and if you need any more help please post again.
