My client will start to work at a mine. She lives in Adelaide and the mine site is in WA. She will work at the site for 2 weeks, then go back home for 1 week, so lots of travel. The travel route is Adelaide-Perth-Mine Site. She has to pay for the flights between Adelaide- Perth and the company pays for the flights between Perth-Mine Site.
Hi @Lana1417,
Airfare and similar modes of traveling for work-related purposes fall under the category of 'Other travel expenses'. If she's not receiving reimbursement from her employer for the airfare cost from Adelaide-Perth, then she would be able to claim a deduction if she's required to take this route in order to reach the work-site.
As our 'Deductions you can claim' page indicates, to claim a work-related expense: • you must have spent the money yourself and weren't reimbursed • it must directly relate to earning your income • you must have a record to prove it.
Additionally, you may find this link regarding 'Occupation and Industry specific tax information for mining site employees' useful :)
