I have always done an upwards variation when i started a new job to ensure i never had a tax bill and incentivise me to get tax return lodged early. Normally when i went to a new job, the old one ended, so all i had to do was start a new variation (which i believe no longer requires the NAT2036 form?).

However, this time i am staying on part time at the old job for 6 mo to a year to help smooth over the transition. I know i need to stop claiming the tax free threshold for that, but i also want to remove the upwards variation so i can apply it to my new job which will transition to FT. HR says I need to do a downward variation, but surely that is more for when you aren't already paying more?

Is there a better way to remove the upwards variation rather than going through the 1-2 mo process of applying for a downward variation, because it isn't reallly a downward variation on what the tax tables say i should be taxed at....

Hiya @mesana,

Because you're not actually varying to lower than the tax tables, you're just cancelling your upwards variation. You can request this from your employer, simply by putting it in writing, wither a physical letter or an email is fine.
