Hi,

I recently completed a course that is directly related to my profession and I am confident I can claim it as a self-education expense. However, my partner paid for my course with his credit card (as he wanted to gain 'points'). I then bank transferred him the entire cost of the course.

My current issue is that although I have paid for the course by transferring my partner the money, when I look at the tax invoice for the course, it clearly states my partner as the payer. The invoice also states my name, as the person taking the course.

I'm wondering how I can claim this at tax time. Should I include a copy of my bank statement that shows I have transferred my partner the exact same amount of money? Or can I simply include the original tax invoice for the course, and as long as my partner also doesn't claim it at tax time (which he cant anyway), it will be fine?

Thank you!

Laura

Hi @Laura433,

You can claim for the cost of the course under self-education expenses as you did ultimately incur the expense by transferring the money back to your partner.

You don't need to include any evidence with your tax return when you lodge it, but rather keep a copy of the bank statement and other supporting evidence for a period of 5 years in the event that we request it.
