I've been trying to apply for a Tax File Number for the past week, but every time i try to apply, the ATO websites says "We are currently experiencing technical difficulties. We apologise for any inconvenience. Try again later".

Sorry to hear that you're running into issues with that. I recommend double checking that you're applying using the appropriate method for your circumstances. Specific circumstances such as residency, citizenship, and your location, can dictate the way you need to apply. I'll run through the different options below with a link to the pages on applying.

If the process you were following was the correct one for your situation I recommend trying to apply using Firefox. This is the browser we generally recommend using, however you could attempt this with different browsers if the issue persists. Trying a different internet connection could also be worth a shot. Please let us know if the issue persists.

Our new online tax file number (TFN) application process is currently in public beta which means there's the occasional glitch. We’re testing and continuing to improve the technology. I'd recommend having a go in different browsers or a different device.


If you're still having trouble, you can apply for a TFN the standard way and complete this online form and book an interview at Australia Post.
