Hi, I work two jobs, one is full-time (earning $574 pw after-tax) and a casual job ($21 per hour usually 12 hours per week = $252 pw but can vary up to $500+ pw). With my casual job, I noticed they don't withhold any tax from my fortnightly payments. I asked my employer about this and she told me that's how it is, that there's a specific amount for that and that the government calculates it. Is this true? I always thought that even casual workers get tax withholdings from their payments. I just want to avoid paying a big bill at the end of the financial year considering I can earn a lot with my casual job.

Hi @bee_6257,

If you take a look at our fortnightly tax tables you'll find that for an income of $252 the tax withheld amount is $52 for the non-tax-free threshold and $0 if you're claiming the tax-free threshold, this would be the reason that no tax was withheld.

You might need to consider changing your tax status for one of your employers and not claim the tax-free threshold, especially if your combined income from both jobs exceeds $18200 annually. That'll help avoid a future tax debt when lodging your tax return.

To update information with your employer you can complete a Withholding declaration https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/Withholding-declaration/

Hi, I took a look on the tax declaration form I sent to the employer I was doing casual wok for and I didn't claim the tax-free threshold. So, shouldn't they have withhold taxes from my fortnightly payments?

Hi @bee_6257

Yes, your employer should be withholding tax from the first dollar if you've ticked no tax free threshold. You can see this on the individual tax rates and the amount of tax they should be withholding from your fortnightly income. When you have two employers, you should only be claiming the tax-free threshold with one. If you're employer is not withholding correctly you may wish to discuss this with them again, or take it up with Fairwork. If not enough tax is withheld, you may have a tax debt at the end of the financial year. You can also request your employer withhold more tax by completing a withholding declaration @RenATO has linked, though. :)
