Hi,

I am currently on 482 work visa. I am planning to trade shares and CFDs in the Australian market. I have couple of questions on this:

  1. Can I trade in Australian stocks marks by buying and selling shares, CFDs and options ? I am unsure of this as I am on 482 work visa.
  2. When will the income from this classed as business ? Also, can I do this with my current work visa ?

Hi @venky_raghaven,

Non-residents for tax purposes can trade on the Australian stock market. If you want more information on this have a look at the moneysmart web site.

To help you determine if you're operating a business consider the following:

  1. are you organised in a business like way,
  2. how often you trade,
  3. nature and purpose of your trading, and
  4. amount of capital investd.

We've some fantastic information on our web site about share investing versus share trading.

Please check with Boarder Force what your visa type allows you to do.
