I'm looking to purchase a safety helmet from the US, as it's not available in Australia. As it's a work related deduction am i allowed to deduct it off my taxes? even though its from overseas. And how would i calculate how much to deduct and can i claim the freight as well?

It doesn't really matter where the item is sourced from. If you meet the criteria for work related deductions than you can claim it.

Generally you need to be able to show that you:

  1. You must have spent the money yourself and weren't reimbursed
  2. The expenses must directly relate to earning your income
  3. You must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt).
