I created a MetaMask Wallet to use for my family trust's investment. However, the wallet does not have any associated ID information.
How can I prove the wallet belongs to the trust when I do tax return? Do I need to prove the ownership?

Hi @John117,
Proof of ownership of cryptocurrency is a requirement for proper record keeping. Although you might not have to provide anything at the point of lodgment, there's of course a chance we may ask for it later on. We know security and privacy with cryptocurrency is constantly changing, so proving ownership might not be as easy as providing a certificate.
So, check out our response on the post "How to prove crypto asset is owned by a trust", There might be something there that ticks a box of what details or documents you might have access to :)

@RachATO I'm in a similar situation. I have read the post you referred, but it doesn't really explain how to prove ownership for the Metamask wallet (or similar kinds of wallet).
Can we just show a screenshot of the wallet?
Or can we document in a meeting minute that a specific wallet and account address is owned by the SMSF?
Or what could be another way?
We have general information on SMSFs investing in crypto, including the requirement to prove ownership over investments overall. But we don't have specific guidance on how a SMSF should prove ownership over their crypto investments.
Beyond normal record-keeping requirements, it's up to you on how to prove the crypto wallet is owned and maintained by the SMSF. You can use things like:
Remember it's important that all SMSF investments are done at arm's length. You should get professional advice before investing in crypto through your SMSF to ensure you're doing everything correctly.
Not financial advice.
If there isn't anything that MetaMask can provide on their end with respect to ownership, then I would be documenting things on the trust's affairs that show ownership (or beneficial ownership) of the assets in the crytpo wallets are for the beneficiaries of the trust.
Eg trust minutes that show the account was set up, attached emails from MetaMask showing it was set up, details of which accounts are held on trust and which ones are held in personal capacities.
"On 01 July 2021 it was resolved that John117 as Trustee for the John117 Family Trust would open a MetaMask account for the benefit of the trust beneficiaries" or somehting like that.
Might not solve the problem of getting docs that show ownership - but will at least give the ATO something that shows you're the owner/controller of the wallet.
"Time was your ally, ATO, but your limited period of review has abandoned you."
