I'm currently up-skilling as an electrical engineer from electrician which is directly related to my current occupation/role.

I pay for my university fees upfront, they are Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) subjects. Can I claim these as a deduction on my tax return? My accountant says it is a grey area so I haven't been claiming them but I'm questioning this advice as the guide doesn't state that I can't. (https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/income-and-deductions/deductions-you-can-claim/self-education-expenses/?=redirected_cup_selfedexp)

According to the above I can't claim the fees if they are paid via HECS/HELP, although they are eligible for these schemes I do not use them.

Thank you.

Hi @Ray89s,

As you're paying for your fees upfront and not through the HECS/HELP scheme and it has a direct link to your current employment activities, I can confirm that you'll be able to claim a deduction for self-education expenses as per the link you've provided "Self-education expenses".
