Hi, I left Australia on Nov 26th for an extended stint in the UK. The ATO would consider me a foreign resident as a I packed up my Melbourne Home and set up a new permanent home.

I have rental income in both countries.

I declared my Aust. rental income on my UK return from Nov 26th to April 5th and paid the due tax.

My question is

If I am to claim double taxation relief, what date range of income do I declare in Australia. I believe I no longer declare UK income after Nov 26th. My tax guy wants UK income to June 30th. ?

Does anyone have some thoughts

Thanks

Scott

Hi @ScottyB

It all depends on when your tax residency changed.

Australia tax residents report and pay tax on their worldwide income. But from the date you became a foreign resident in Australia, only the income you earn from Australian sources is taxable and reportable here.

So you will need to work out with your tax agent when your residency changed. Generally it's the date you actually left Australia. From that time on, you wouldn't report non-Australian sourced income.
