Hi, I am a newly registered Sole Trader and plan to get my new business up and running!

I have sourced containers (plastic and paper containers) required for by business from Alibaba and am unsure of any additional fees required to get them from China to my Address in Australia (I have done my research yet am still confused).

I am wanting to purchase 3 products:

  1. The current price for the goods on Alibaba are (when transferred from USD) $2300 AUD and shipping to my door is $800. What taxes am I required to pay and does this apply to the shipping fee as well?
  2. 2nd product (different supplier) is $582 AUD and shipping (to my door) $260 AUD - Because the cost price is under $1000 will I need to pay any additional fees/taxes so it can get to me in Australia?
  3. 3rd product (different supplier also) is $800 AUD and shipping to my door is $300 - The total of product and shipping is over $1000. Is this calculated together or does the shipping not apply (when paying taxes) and I do not need to pay a particular tax on this?
  4. One of the suppliers has offered $150 AUD shipping to Australia which is a huge price drop, but is delivered to 'Sydney Port' - What fees/requirements will I need to do to get my purchase to my door with this option?

I hope this all makes sense.

Thanks in advanced for the reponse/s. From A very nervous yet excited entrepreneur here!

Hi @DanDan8,

Generally, it is who you're buying from that'll charge good and services tax, (GST). They'll collect and pay it to us on your behalf.

When the products arrive in Australia, Border Force will check them. If the goods are over $1,000 you'll need to sign an import declaration, pay duties and taxes.

Have a look at Australian Border Force web site, they've excellent information about buying online also, GST and other taxes when importing.

Enjoy your new adventure!
