I'm a support worker and have purchased a ute as a business car as I will be taking clients camping and so on. New utes don't come with any secure tray covers. I will need to transport wheel chairs and walkers and so on that will need to be locked away securely. Can I claim the cost of a retractable tub cover to secure these items?

Hi @CraigFoley,

Do you use the vehicle solely for business? or do you use it for private as well?

When claiming a deduction, the vehicle must be for business use and not private use. If you do use the vehicle for business and private, you'll still be able to claim a deduction, but you can only claim part of the cost of the tub cover. You'll need to work out the percent it's used for business and claim that percent of the cost.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I use the car 100% for business. So the retractable tub lock will cost $1200. Could you tell me how much of that I get back and over how many years?

Hello @CraigFoley,

Your deduction or depreciation is dependent on what method you use to claim so this is partially a self assessment situation. The different methods are listed on our tool/asset deductions page and if there are any more specific question we put out a guide to depreciation each year with more in depth explanation of the rules. If you use a method that uses depreciation of time we do have some examples listed in the guide or you can use the depreciation tool on the ATO website to help. If you are unable to locate a time frame the matches with your asset the general rule is what you determine is the estimated life of the asset, as long as you can explain your reasoning and time frame if requested you will normally be fine with your claim.
