Hello,

I am a New Zealand Citizen who has just moved to Australia for a full time job.

I intend to live here permanently.

Many of my friends and family living here have advised me to apply as a 'Resident for Tax Purposes' when applying for a TFN. I followed their advice and had an interview with Australia Post where my application was denied due to not having the correct documentation (I was told my stamped Australian bank statement did not count and I needed a medicare card).

As a New Zealander what TFN category do I fall under?

If I am a 'foreign resident for tax purposes', do I need to re-apply as a 'resident' once I have met the 183 day threshold?

Feeling very confused.

Hi @Maddie28,

Sorry your application was denied. Unfortunately one of the categories for you to be classed as an Australian resident is:

  • you've been here continuously for six months or more.

You'll need to apply for your TFN by following the process for Foreign passport holders this option may best suit your situation at this stage and its done online.

No, you won't need to apply again for a TFN once you have a TFN it yours for life. When you have met the requirements to be an Australian resident for tax purposes, you'll notify us of this on your tax return.
