Hi all. I applied for compassionate release of superannuation from an account which had $10,000 in it I didn’t know I had. It is for emergency dental work. I submitted the claim on 29/09/22 and I still haven’t heard anything. In support of my application was a letter from my GP and a dental quote. I’m in agony. Does anyone know how long these applications are taking please? The ATO says 14 days but now nearly 3 weeks

Hi @Waiting-1979,

We're sorry to hear of your pain :(.

When we receive your application for compassionate release of super, your eligibility is assessed and the relevant third parties may be contacted. Once this is completed we'll contact you by phone or SMS and you'll receive a letter in your myGov Inbox. The letter may take up to 72 hours to arrive (this may take longer if your letter is issued via post).

If your application is successful, we notify your super fund. Thereafter, you must contact your super fund to arrange release of your money. You'll need to provide your fund with a copy of our approval letter to process your payment. The letter can only be used to release one lump sum payment. You should wait for your approval letter before contacting your super fund.

You can also check our website for further information - What to expect after you apply.

Hopefully your application is finalised soon.
