Hi there! I came to Australia about 2 months ago with my partner on a Working Holiday visa and intended to stay for a year and do some work. We have split up so I am heading back to Europe early, however I have already received a TFN but I haven't done any work so there has been no income.


As I understand, there's no way to get rid of the TFN. Am I supposed to let ATO know that I am leaving and will not be having any earnings here? Or lodge any kind of tax return?

Hi @kwilson,


You aren't required to notify us that you're leaving Australia. It's true that you keep your TFN even if you leave Australia permanently, but thats nothing to worry about.


If you haven't earned any income while in Australia then you won't need to lodge a tax return either. You might need to lodge non lodgement advice, which you can do either through myGov or by mail. This will let us know that you don't need to lodge any future tax returns.
