Hi,

I’m in a very complicated situation.

Basically I created my TFN via the online beta application form on the ATO website (I took a screenshot of the TFN).

However, the ATO didn’t automatically link to my MyGov account, and I heard once you create your TFN, the ATO will automatically link to MyGov (which hasn’t happened).

I really wanna check to see if the TFN I created is valid, and the only way I can do that is by going to the ATO (which I can’t because it’s not linked to my MyGov account).

But I can’t link the ATO to MyGov because I don’t have any of the information details required for step 3. I don’t have a superannuation or bank account associated with the ATO. I don’t have a Centrelink payment summary, I don’t even know what a dividends statement, notice of assessment or PAYG payment summary is. I’m 18 — do you really expect me to know/have/possess this information??

I’ve tried re-applying for a TFN via the same online beta application form and it says I already have one. Considering I already took a screenshot of the TFN, there’s really no problem, however I still want to link the ATO to my MyGov account.

I’ve tried calling the ATO numerous times but it’s incredibly hard to explain my situation and it’s clear no one really understands what I’m saying.

In summary:

  • I want to link the ATO to my MyGov account.
  • I’m unable to do that because I don’t have any of the information required for step 3. Like I don’t have a bank or superannuation account associated with the ATO, and I don’t know what the rest are.
  • I want to do this to see and confirm my TFN.
  • I need a TFN for the HECS-HELP application.

What should I do? :/

Hi @james108,

If you applied using the online system linked from our website, the TFN should be valid. You won't need to check it's valid through myGov before you start using it.

Sorry to hear you've been having trouble linking your account. If you're unable to link using the questions online you can instead look at obtaining a linking code. These codes allow you to link your account without needing to fill in details for those questions. Our page on linking myGov runs through getting one.
