Can you claim GST on monthly Spotify Subscription if the receipt they provide isn't Australian Tax Office Compliant? I have contacted Spotify (sweden) and a receipt is all they provide but it doesn't show the ABN that is registered in Australia either. Is this enough?
Hi @sedmonds,
Is the Spotify Subscription is less than $82.50 (including GST) on a monthly basis and is used for purposes of running your business? If so, when its $82.50 or less a receipt is sufficient for record keeping purposes to claim.
If is isn't have a look at our Tax invoice page for more details and when you can and can't claim GST credits.

@WendyATO thank you
Hi, Don't we need to first make sure if Spotify charges GST tax for their subscription?
Hi @Dileepa,
Keep in mind, we tend to pay for goods or services based on an invoice. If the invoice has GST on it, then you're right, it's a very good idea to make sure the business is registered for GST.
If the receipt they give you isn't Australian Tax Office compliant, is it still possible to claim GST on your monthly Spotify subscription? When I contacted Spotify [link removed by moderator] (in Sweden), all they gave me was a receipt, but it also didn't include the ABN that is registered in Australia. Is this sufficient?@Waseem_Shehzad
Hi @SHAMEER,
Spotify shouldn't be charging GST if you are using the service for business use in the first place. If they have been, they may need to reimburse you for the GST portion they have charged.
To answer your questions though, yes, you can use a receipt to claim GST credits, but you need to request approval first.
For those that are confused. Spotify is using the simplified GST registration so a 12 digit ARN not an ABN. It's similar situation with other overseas services like OpenAI, Shopify etc. No ABN = No GST credits to claim. Under simplified GST registration, it is assumed all customers being charged GST are consumers i.e. no businesses. Generally, need to notify them you are a business and not be charged for GST in the first place
