Hi

I am currently working as a public servant at a state government agency in WA. I am planning to move overseas for one year in September and take 1 year of unpaid leave from my current employer. I also have an investment property currently rented out and planning to end the lease to let my sister live there after I will leave for my overseas job in September.

Although, I am a public servant at a state government agency and will be on unpaid leave, am I considered a non-resident for tax purpose?

Considering, I have worked July and August during the 2023-24 financial year and my house was on rent as well during this time, what would be my tax return scenario?

Also, I will be working overseas up to the end of (30 June) 2023-24 financial year and my sister will be staying for free and taking care of my property in my absence during this period.

Do I need to pay any tax for my salary overseas for the 2023-24 tax return?

Hi @Sam28,

That sounds exciting spending a year overseas.

When it comes to your tax residency. Unfortunately, we cannot determine that for you. There is a great page for how to work your residency you may find helpful.

If you determine you are a non-resident when you move overseas but were a resident for part of the financial year. You would indicate on your tax return the dates you would be considered a resident.

Your reporting requirements can change with your tax residency. When it comes to the income you receive from overseas. If you are a foreign resident, you generally don't need to declare income you receive from outside Australia in your Australian tax return. However, if you have a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), Trade Support Loan (TSL) or VET Student Loan (VSL) debt you may need to declare your worldwide income. If you receive any income earned in Australia, you must declare it on your tax return.

If you determine you are still an Australian resident for tax purposes. You must declare income you earn anywhere in the world in your Australian tax return. This is known as your worldwide income.
