I want to change my title from Miss to Mx to as that has been my lived identity for the past two years, but I can't unless I change my whole name and get a name change certificate and I do not want to change any part of the rest of my name. Last end of financial year and tax return, it was so mentally damaging seeing Miss on my documentation and I don't want to have to go through that every single year, especially as I get further and further away from the identity of Miss. Please help.

I understand it is distressing to see a title on your account you don’t identify with. We value diversity and always strive for inclusivity.


Unfortunately, at this stage Mx isn’t available as title option – however, you can choose to have no title.


To do this you’ll need to access online services through myGov. You can do this via a browser or the ATO app.


If you’ve logged in through a browser, you can select My profile from the menu. Go to Personal details and select Update title only. This will bring up the option to choose No title.

I didn't know that I could choose to not have a title. That is really helpful, thank you. I can't find the Update Title Only option on myGov, it just shows my name and date of birth. I am doing it through the Microsoft Edge browser if that has any affect. It says I need to update the details with Centrelink, Medicare or the Australian Taxation Office. Am I missing something? Is the option not appearing for some reason? Does this mean I need to call to get my title changed to No Title?
