Hi everyone, I am quite stressed about this tax season, I have a casual job but on the side I have been tutoring 3 students in maths. I have made a little money off this and was wondering how do I declare this on my tax return.

I am unsure how to do it under PSI and none of the ATO websites have helped - I have put all of the payments from my students on the mydeductions part of the ATO app and tried to upload it but the app wouldn't let me

I am also unsure if I should/need to apply for an ABN in order to lodge my income for my tutoring side hustle

The money I make doesn't put me above the tax threshold so I wont be paying any tax.

Hi @1603,

I understand you're stressed so I'll break this down :)

Firstly, you can declare the income from tutoring as PSI - I'm not sure if you've seen this web page but there's an instructional video and written guidance to help you with filling out this section.

If you have any expenses from tutoring, you can claim these as deductions.

You don't need to worry about registering for an ABN until your GST turnover is over $75,000. If you do get an ABN it means your clients won't need to withhold the highest rate of tax from your payments.

All of your income (tutoring and your casual job) is taken into account when working out your tax liability. Do both jobs together earn $18,200 or less?

The myDeductions tool is only for tracking expenses you want to deduct - not payments you receive.

We're here if you need more help. You've until 31 October to finalise your return so no rush!

Everything I’ve earnt together doesn’t come to 18,200! I’m still confused on how to declare it as personal services income as when i’ve tried doing this it tells me to put in payers name and abn
