I can get on to MyGov, but if I click the button to take me to the ATO website, I get the following error:
This site can’t be reached
auth.ato.gov.au took too long to respond.
(I am currently overseas, so I tried VPN'ing into Melbourne, but that did not help.)

We had some planned maintainence going on last night with the site. This might have been why.
Are you able to access it now?
i have the same issue but in thailand. i did my tax return last year here just fine. i did a dnsflush and nothing changed. have tried all my browsers.
Strange. I can get into the website now just fine. Maybe open a separate browser and go straight into the website that way.
i can get to the website but as soon as i click login it dies. thats sboth from mygove after clicking the ato link and straight to ato website. it wont let me login. which country are you in?

This does happen from time to time, and I know how annoying it can be.
It's an issue with the domain name system.
We've answered a similar question on this forum, with success. Check it out.
Thank you @CaroATO for pointing me to the right post.
I changed first DNS Servers to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4, it didn't work for me.
Then I changed it to 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1 and it worked!
It could find finally the IP of ATO website :-D
