I need a linking code as I do not have a bank account listed as its my first return. Tried calling multiple times with voicemail experience big delays call back later. This is happening early morning, late arvo middle of day. ATO should provide a better way for first timers especially when I work and go to Uni.

We understand it must be frustrating but unfortunately this is the only way you can get a linking code. We wouldn't be able to make it an automated process at it wouldn't be a very secure way to get a linking code. Our processes are in place to protect your security.
same issue, ATO need to pull their finger out and either answer the phone or automate the linking code process.

just make sure the phone system doesn't hang up after saying it's busy, like it just did now :(
Trouble getting through - I don't get an option - the recording states we are busy try again - no hold option, 2 months now since 1st July. How about having an option for new starters to register a bank account. So the ATO will extend tax returns after October eh !
