For the 2021-22 financial year I lodged a return through an online tax website, however I’ve recently received an amendment saying I owe the ato because the income reported was lower than what I actually got. It’s a fair chunk of money, and I know it wasn’t my mistake, apparently my employer didn’t fully report my correct income. Should my employer be liable for the debt.

Hi @DionSl8r,

No, your employer is not liable for the debt. The income you advised that you received sounds correct. It was just that the 'income reported was lower than what I actually got'. It is up to you to check all the information you are lodging on your tax return is correct. If the employer had reported wrong, but you could see there was a significant difference. You would then speak to the employer about the discrepancy. When you lodge your return, you are declaring that the information is correct.

If you received a refund last year but you were not entitled to the full amount of that refund. That would be the reason for the debt.
