I have recently discovered that my employer has been deducting a study and training loans amount (STSL) from my fortnightly pay. The strange thing is that I am not undertaking any study at the moment and have not done so since 2011 (postgrad). I have traced the deduction back to a payslip in April 2022 when the deduction first appeared on a payslip. I have submitted a Withdrawal Declaration form with my employer (last Friday) with the 'do you have a HELP debt' value of No. So this should be fixed in the next pay period. I have checked with the ATO via ato.gov.au and my loan account balance for HELP is $0.00. I have not sent a Withdrawal Declaration form to payroll since 2015.

My question is how could this change occur without payroll receiving a Withdrawal Declaration form back in or around April 2022 when the deduction first appeared on the payslip ? I have had no other employers at that time. My thinking is that there may have been a data entry error along the way within payroll but just seeing if there are any other possibilities as to how this may have occurred or if anyone has had a similar scenario.

Hello there @nondeplumb,

That's very unusual! If you haven't asked for this to be done, they shouldn't have done it. Normally payroll software uses codes to determine the math they base withholding on. It is possible somewhere along the line your record ended up with a code it shouldn't have.

There is the possibility they may refund your over withheld amounts. They could only do this from July but since they were withholding too much, it's worth discussing.
