I was a sole trader and am currently going through an divorce / settlement case which involves a valuation on my business which is taking place outside of Australia.

Because the court is unfamiliar with the Australian taxation system they have requested a statement from the ATO confirming a tax debt where I was on a payment plan. Specifically they want to know "For which periods, in what amounts, and for which taxes did the debt relate". They also want to know about a HELP debt that was partially repaid during the marriage.

Who can I contact at the ATO to get an official statement to satisfy this court? I have already provided statements of accounts from my MYGOV site however they want an official statement from an ATO employee.

They have given me the opportunity to provide this information to expedite proceedings, if i cannot get an official statement they have requested they have stated that they will send a letter of request to the Australian authorities which will significantly delay proceedings.

Hi @nate.carpentry,

Hmm okay - based on what you’ve said, it sounds like you may be downloading a summary view of your tax account rather than an official ATO letter we've previously sent.

There are two different ways you can view account info in your Online services:

  • Home or Alerts > Tax account > Summary:
    • This shows an on‑screen summary of your account and is often what people print, but it isn’t an official letter.
  • Profile > Communication history:
    • This is where you can download any official ATO correspondence we’ve issued to you.

If you need an official statement or letter (with the ATO logo, reference number and barcodes), go to Communication history in your Online services through myGov. You can download documents such as notices of assessment, statements of account for specific lodged years and any payment plan letters we've sent.

If you need a copy of your Higher Education Loan Payment (HELP) debt transactions and summary, you can download a print‑friendly version from your Online services. This includes the Australian Government emblem and ATO logo and shows the transactions applied to your HELP account.

To access it:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of your Online services home page and look for Loan accounts.
  2. Select your HELP loan, which will take you to your current balance and transaction history.
  3. From there, choose Print‑friendly version to download a copy.

If you’re unable to access your HELP account online or need a more detailed statement of account, you’ll need to phone our individual line so we can provide it for you.
