I'm Australian tax residency for the full year and have private hospital cover for the full year. My spouse was oversea and arrived in Australia and became Australian residency since 14/08/2024, so her private hospital cover started from 14/08/2024 the time she arrived in Australia. Do they both apply for Full year medicare levy exemptions?

Hi @evewang,

No. Medicare eligibility is what determines a Medicare levy exemption, not having private hospital cover.

If you were an Australian tax resident and eligible for Medicare for the full year, you don’t qualify for a Medicare levy exemption.

Your spouse may be eligible for a Medicare levy exemption for the period before 14 August 2024, when she wasn’t an Australian resident or eligible for Medicare. From that date onward, the levy applies.
