As a small business owner, I understand that accommodation and meals if you are away overnight are deductable under travel expenses.

However, when travelling to remote places for work(where food is not always available to be purchased), the business owner purchases food PRIOR to departing, so that they can eat while away on business for a week at a time. Are these purchases still considered deductable under travel?

Hi @shellykarcz,

Yep! You can claim food purchased before you leave as part of your travel expenses.

To claim these expenses, you have to meet the following conditions:

  • be travelling and staying away from your home overnight for work purposes
  • have paid for the expenses yourself and not been reimbursed
  • keep records such as receipts for the food purchases
  • only claim the amounts you actually spent on meals for the work travel.
