The ATO introduced SecureMail late January 2026. The portal does not seem to be sending GIC remissions anywhere. I was contacted by a debt person today to say that he could see we had lodged but that it could not be actioned because of some type of fault

Hi @taniawater,
I just wanted to clarify that the secure mail has been a way to communicate with us securely since before January 2026 for Online Services for businesses and registered tax agents.
Individuals can’t access Secure mail unless they also have Online services for business access (for example, as a sole trader).
For GIC, SIC or FTL remissions, the request must use the correct remission application form and be lodged through one of the accepted channels.
If a remission form has been lodged through Secure mail but hasn’t progressed due to a system fault, it’s best to request the remission by phoning our lodge and pay enquiries line so it can be fornally recorded and, if needed, escalated for further investigation.
You can also mail the completed form and let the officer know that the online submission couldn’t be actioned due to a technical issue. This helps ensure the request is captured and assessed without further delay.
It’s also important to know that one of the factors we consider when deciding whether to grant a remission is whether the current tax debt has been addressed.
Because of this, calling us is often the best option. It allows you/your client to:
- report the Secure mail issue,
- confirm the remission request has been received, and
- if needed - address the status of the outstanding debt or request to set up a payment plan in the same call.
