Hi,

I have not received a tax return for 2023-2024 lodgement and 2024-2025 lodgement. It says that the status is "in progress" but for 2023-2024 lodgement, I lodged in October 2024 and I have been waiting for 18 months. I contacted ATO IG to ask what to do and they gave me a number to call but the call never took me customer representatives as my lodgement is "in progress". 18 months of waiting for my tax return is a bit ridiculous. Could you tell me what to do or at least could you clarify why it's been taking for 18 months.

Hi @Ai0000,

Sometimes returns take longer if we need to verify details you've provided, we're waiting for third-party information (like income from your bank), or we're conducting extra checks.

Given it's been 18 months, lodging a complaint is the best next step. You can call the complaints line or lodge an online form, and detail the following:

  • you lodged your 2023-24 return in Oct 2024, it's still 'in progress'
  • whether you've received any requests for further information
  • explain you've been unable to resolve via phone or self-service channels, and
  • ask for an update on why the return is delayed

The complaints team will confirm if there's any further info we need to finalise your return.
