Hi,

I was working as a Sole Trader in Australia but have relocated to New Zealand. I issued my last Australian contract invoice end of March. I have just filed my Jan-March 2026 BAS. Can I now cancel my ABN? or do I need to wait until the end of the tax year?

Hi,

If you’ve effectively ceased operating your business in Australia and have no outstanding obligations such as lodgement, payment, or reporting you can cancel your ABN. There’s no need to wait until the end of the financial year.

If you choose to keep the ABN active, you’ll continue to be prompted to lodge activity statements.

Below are links to the ATO and ABR with information on cancelling an ABN.

Cancel your ABN | Australian Business Register

Cancelling business registrations | Australian Taxation Office

You can also cancel your ABN over the phone by calling the ATO on 13 72 26.
