Hello,
I am seeking clarification regarding ABN entitlement for a new freelance venture.
I am a Visual Effects (VFX) professional currently residing in Australia. I am on a Bridging Visa A (BVA) with unlimited work entitlements (no conditions), while awaiting the outcome of a Subclass 186 Direct Entry visa application.
I am planning to provide specialized VFX services to international clients located globally. I am currently at the "commencement" stage, where I am setting up my home-based workstation and launching an email marketing campaign to secure my first contracts.
I have a few specific questions regarding the ABN application:
Entitlement Timing: Am I entitled to apply for an ABN now to set up the necessary business infrastructure (such as multi-currency receiving accounts and completing international tax residency forms), or must I wait until I have a signed contract?
Evidence of Enterprise: If my global outreach campaign takes several weeks or months to result in a paid project, what specific records should I maintain to demonstrate that I am "carrying on an enterprise" in a business-like manner for an entitlement review?
Visa Status: Does the fact that I am on a Bridging Visa A (pending Permanent Residency) impact the ABN application process or the criteria for being considered a "Sole Trader"?
Thank you for your guidance.
