I am PR residing oversea and am classified as a foreign resident for tax purposes.I hold a bank account with an overseas residential address on record and have not provided a TFN.

For the financial year 2024–2025, the bank has deducted 10% non-resident withholding tax on my interest income, as legally required. However, I have received a letter from the ATO stating that no tax payment has been identified for this income.

Why it happened and what I should do next?

Hi @Wanghuan,

This happens because non‑resident withholding tax on bank interest is final tax and isn’t recorded on your account as a tax payment made by you.

The tax is withheld and paid by the bank, so it won’t show as a payment against your record. That’s why you may receive a letter saying no tax payment has been identified.

If you’re a foreign resident for tax purposes and the interest was correctly applied as non‑resident withholding tax, no further action is required. Keep the bank records showing the tax was withheld.
