Hi all,

I’m currently in the process of deregistering two Australian companies through Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). I’ve already submitted the Form 6010 – Voluntary Deregistration applications and have received notification that final lodgements need to be completed before the deregistration can be finalised.

I’m trying to clarify the exact process for lodging a final / nil (zero) company tax return with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), particularly where the companies:

  • Have had no trading activity
  • I have lodged ZERO returns for recent years
  • Need to be finalised purely to complete deregistration

My questions:

  1. Is there a specific “final” or “zero return” form, or do I just lodge the standard Company Tax Return and mark it as final?
  2. If the company had no activity, is lodging a nil return sufficient, or are there additional steps required?
  3. Can this be lodged directly via ATO Online Services for Business, or paper copy
  4. Are there any additional final obligations I should be aware of, such as:
  5. Is there a direct ATO portal or link where I can complete the final return myself?

Any guidance, links, or step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

You lodge a return as per the usual way, software or paper or tax agent. I think it is possible to do early lodgment through all methods

"Early tax returns can be lodged electronically using Standard Business Reporting (SBR)-enabled software."
