Hello

I have noticed the income statement for the previous tax year provided by my former employer is incorrect. I have already submitted my tax return and it has been processed. Before amending my return should I notify my former employer to make a correction?

Thank you!

G'day @Taxboy1970 👋

The employer is the source of truth for the Income Statement data. If you change it, the ATO will change it back.

The first step is to contact your former employer and discuss the items and amounts you think they got wrong, perhaps what they should be. Maybe there are ATO website pages that support your position? Then ask them to correct the information, as they have an obligation to report "true and correct" data to the ATO.

If they agree, they will correct the data, issue an amendment and you can take it from there. That's the easiest and quickest path to getting this addressed.😉

If they disagree, then perhaps you can post about the details of the issue here and others may offer their opinion about the correctness or otherwise of your former employer's response?
